Periodontal Treatment

If you suspect you have a gum disease or have already been diagnosed, don’t worry! There are a variety of treatments available for you. These treatments are dependant on the details and extent of your infection. At Doral Dental Specialists, we strive to use the least invasive treatment options first to avoid any unnecessary complications. Therefore, we will always try to use non-surgical solutions for your gum disease. However, if your infection is severe, surgery may be necessary.

The primary non-surgical treatment of gum disease is a type of unique deep oral cleaning known as scaling and root planing. In this treatment, an ultrasonic cleaning device removes tartar and plaque from your teeth. However, this cleaning device reaches areas that normal cleaning devices cannot. It can clean all of your teeth’s surfaces and can also reach plaque and bacteria under the gum line and around the root as well. After your mouth gets cleaned up by this device, the rough surfaces of your affected teeth and roots are “planed” and smoothed out. This allows for clean, healthy surfaces on your teeth for your gum tissues to reconnect to. If you catch your gum disease early, the scaling and root planing procedure may be the only treatment necessary.

If your gum disease is too severe there are a variety of other surgical options. A pocket depth reduction, also known as flap surgery, is a surgery that is done when your gum disease has become advanced enough to cause open spaces (known as “pockets”) in the gum tissues. These pockets are prime targets for bacteria to infect and grow in. During a pocket depth reduction, these pockets are cleaned out and sewn back together to allow your teeth and gums to heal properly.

Sometimes so much damage has occurred to the teeth and gums that a pocket depth reduction is not enough to fix the mouth completely. When that is the case, a more in-depth surgery involving a bone or tissue graft is usually needed in order to regenerate the damaged tissues and bring your mouth to proper working order.
